Garage Door Locks – Are You Keeping Yours Secure?

Hi, Dougie here from Locksmith Romsey. Thought I’d share a few thoughts about something a lot of people overlook – garage door locks and security.

When you think about locking up your home, most folks go straight to the front or back door. Fair enough. But your garage door could be just as important – especially if it’s got valuable gear inside or gives access to the house.

I’ve seen quite a few break-ins over the years where the garage was the way in. The good news is, sorting out decent security for it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Why Garage Door Security Matters Around Romsey

Romsey’s a lovely town – I’ve lived and worked around here for years – but like anywhere, there’s always the odd chancer about. Garages can be an easy target if they’re not properly secured, especially in quieter areas or down side streets.

I get a fair few calls from people after a garage break-in or when they’ve noticed something dodgy going on. A solid lock makes a big difference, and it’s often a quick fix.

Types of Garage Door Locks I Fit Around Romsey

There are a few main types of garage door locks I work with regularly. It usually depends on the style of door and what level of security you’re after.

T-Handle Locks

These are the ones you’ll often find on older up-and-over garage doors. They’ve got a T-shaped handle and use a key to turn the mechanism inside. Not bad when they’re in good nick, but they do wear out and can be forced if they’re not maintained.

Slide Bolts / Drop Bolts

Fitted inside the garage, these bolts slide into the frame or ground. They’re solid and straightforward – great as an extra layer of security alongside your main lock.

Garage Door Defenders

These are fitted to the ground outside the door and stop it from opening, even if someone’s tampered with the lock. They’re a brilliant visual deterrent and especially useful if your garage faces the road or a driveway.

Smart or Electric Locks

For electric garage doors or if you’re into tech, there are keyless options too – keypad entry, remotes, even smartphone control. Not for everyone, but they’re secure and handy if you want something modern.

Signs Your Garage Lock Might Need a Look

Here are a few things I look out for when I’m called out to check a garage door:

  • The lock feels loose, jammed or stiff
  • You’ve lost a set of keys and aren’t sure who might have them
  • The door rattles more than it used to
  • There’s visible rust or damage on the lock or handle
  • You’ve not had it looked at in years

Even if it’s just for peace of mind, it’s worth getting it checked – especially if you’ve got tools, bikes, or other expensive gear stored in there.

Final Word from Dougie

Garage doors are easy to forget about until something goes wrong – and by then, it’s usually too late. A decent lock doesn’t cost the earth and can save you a lot of hassle down the line.
