Which Deadlock?

Deadlock Locks

Deadlocks are a popular lock choice in Romsey and across the UK, commonly used as secondary security locks. Operated with a simple turn of the key, these locks secure a bolt into the strike plate in the door frame. Unlike nightlatches, deadlocks need to be manually locked and unlocked, providing better protection against physical attacks. Let's explore the different types of deadlocks available and their applications.

Types of Deadlocks

3 Lever Deadlock

The 3 lever deadlock is ideal for low-security applications, offering basic protection. These locks are perfect for internal doors like bedrooms, storage cupboards, and other areas where high security isn't essential. They’re smaller than the 5 lever deadlocks since most internal doors are about 35mm thick, while exterior doors are usually around 45mm.

5 Lever Deadlock

If you’re looking for a bit more security, the 5 lever deadlock is a great upgrade from the 3 lever version. These locks are larger and offer more key combinations due to the additional levers. They also come with extra security features like anti-pick and anti-saw bolts, and boxed strike plates. However, these are best suited for internal doors that are 45mm and thicker, as they aren’t British Standard BS3621 rated.

5 Lever British Standard Deadlock

For external doors, the 5 lever British Standard deadlock is the way to go. Rated to BS3621, these locks are often required by insurance companies to qualify for contents insurance. They include anti-pick and anti-saw features, with an extended 20mm bolt throw that locks into a steel boxed security strike plate. Additionally, they have a hardened steel plate to protect the levers from drilling and a security curtain to guard against picking.

How to Identify BS3621 Rated Locks

Not sure if your current locks are BS3621 rated? Check the front edge where the bolt is; if it has a British Standard kite mark, you're good to go.
